Iconic Island

Iconic Island

Iconic Island Perfume

I was born and raised in India, where summer temperatures often reached 47°C (116°F). Now, I live on Bainbridge Island in Washington, at 47 degrees North latitude. This is a complete contrast. I tell my friends I am from 47C and now live on 47N :)

One of my first memories of the island was coming over the ferry from Seattle: I had never been on a "ship"--as I called it then--that carried so many cars. I had only seen these boats on my favorite TV show--Grey's Anatomy.

Even before watch parties were a thing, before streaming or recording was available, my friends and I used to watch the episodes of Grey's Anatomy at the appointed time, separately in our Mumbai apartments. I'd sigh over the glamorous aerial shots of the Seattle needle and ferries on the sound. I didn't know then that one day I would find myself here. :)

When I took the ferry for the very first time, as the boat pulled away from the pier, I could not stop smiling. I was full of wonder. The engineer in me was fascinated by the power of the propellers, while the poet in me marveled at the whirlpool the wake created. The ocean, the landscape, the sea gulls, all seemed like a dream.

Even today, every season on the island fills me with wonder—the open fields, the ravines, the grand forest, and the wildlife...

This summer, JG Art Gallery hosted an exhibition of local artists with the theme of "Iconic Bainbridge." Paintings, sculptures and mixed media art brought the colors and visuals of the island to life. I was delighted to have the opportunity to create an olfactory journey to the island for the occasion. This lent a lovely multi-sensory feel to the exhibition.

I created three different scent journeys (read about them here) and also created a special perfume Iconic Bainbridge  aka Iconic Island.

This perfume, now available on my website for purchase, is my attempt at capturing the "en plein air" scent in a bottle.

I hope you get to experience this perfume, and perhaps visit this gem of a place.

Description of the perfume:

This perfume is inspired by Bainbridge Island in Washington. It is just a 35-minute ferry ride from Seattle, but it feels like a city situated in a nature park. Majestic forests, streams, ravines, meadows, wetlands, and shoreline—the island’s varied landscape is a treasure. This composition takes you on a scented journey to the Pacific Northwest; to the cool, fresh, and green elements of the Evergreen State.
